Yongala Dive
Yongala Dive
Rated one of the top 10 dive sites in the world, the S.S. Yongala dive is an experience for those with a sense of adventure, a passion to explore and a desire to learn about the tragic history of the SS Yongala and to witness marine life matched by few other places in the world.
The S.S. Yongala was a 110m passenger and cargo ship that sank off Cape Bowling Green on 23 March 1911, with the loss of all 122 people on board. This tragic event remains one of the Australia's worse maritime disasters. A Navy vessel identified a possible ‘wreck' in a mine-sweeping mission in 1947, but it was never followed up. The ship lay undiscovered for almost 50 years, until it was finally positively identified in 1958.
Yongala Dive, based at Alva, is a PADI 5 Star Dive Resort which offers the fastest way to get to the wreck. Diving the wreck is an experience matched by few other places on the planet. You'll come face to face with a prolific amount of marine life including giant gropers, enormous marble rays, schools of barracuda, eagle rays, turtles, sea snakes, bull sharks and more.
