Beaches

For an easy coastal wander, Alva and Wunjunga make ideal choices. Alva provides both a sandy shoreline and a relaxed park path for walking, while Wunjunga's 14km of coastline is perfect for those wanting a more expansive seaside walk.

Burdekin Be Active Trail

The Burdekin Be Active Trails in Ayr and Home Hill promote improving your health through physical activity and maps out walks of 1km to 5km throughout both towns. The trails are an all-access, all-hours exercise path complete with rest stations, activity stations and water points. The walking trails for Ayr and Home Hill can be found on the Burdekin Be Active Trail Map.

Burdekin Bridge Walk

The Burdekin River Bridge, affectionately referred to as the Silver Link, is the district’s best-known landmark - it also offers a fantastic walk along the pedestrian walkway. Taking a walk across the 'Silver Link' offers visitors completely unobstructed views of the mighty Burdekin River.

Visitors wanting to experience walking across the Burdekin River Bridge will need to pull off the highway on the Ayr side heading south, find a park near the stairs and walk up to the bridge access from there. You can then walk along the pedestrian walkway under the bridge. Walking across during the sugarcane harvesting season adds another layer to the experience, with clear views of sugarcane bins and activity at the Inkerman Sugar Mill holding yard on the Home Hill side. The full walk is approximately 2.2km return.

Juru Walk

Juru Walk is a walking trail developed in partnership with Burdekin Shire Council and the Gudjuda Reference Group and is located at the southern end of Plantation Park, Ayr. Juru Walk showcases the cultural importance of Plantation Park and provides a 'learning space' for the Burdekin community. Juru Walk is situated in what is believed to be the Burdekin’s last remaining remnant rainforest. The area includes a lagoon teeming with wildlife as well as several art sculptures.

Mt Inkerman

Rising dramatically from the vast surrounding landscape, Mt Inkerman, south of Home Hill, offers an awe-inspiring view of the landscape below. The hike up to the top via the Mt Inkerman Nature Trail (MINT) offers a steep but scenic walk that winds through the bush to reveal the vast Burdekin landscape. The district’s rich agricultural country and the sheer size of the Burdekin River is best appreciated from here.

There are two access points to the Mount Inkerman Nature Trail, both leading to the lookout.

  • Access Point One: Turn off the Bruce Highway at the Mount Inkerman turnoff. About halfway up the road, a clearing on the right marks the start of the trail.

  • Access Point Two: Turn off the Bruce Highway at the Mount Inkerman Shop. Park in the car park and walk left alongside the mountain, where you’ll find signage marking the trail entry.

The Mount Inkerman Nature Trail is a 30-45 minute walk. Allow time at the top to take in the views across the Burdekin, especially stunning at sunrise or sunset.
