The Burdekin is known for its spectacular cane fires, which take place between June and November each year during the sugarcane harvesting season. The region is one of the last in Australia to predominantly burn sugarcane before harvesting, a long-standing practice that removes excess leaf material and prepares the crop for harvest.
Witnessing a cane paddock being set alight is a powerful experience, with towering flames, crackling heat and glowing embers lighting up the landscape, either in the early mornings or late afternoons. Fires are carefully planned and controlled by local farmers, and viewings should always be done from a safe distance.
For self-contained campers wanting to learn more about this practice and experience it up close, Greg from Burdekin Cane Farm Stay offers you the opportunity to understand why cane is burned and how harvesting works in the region. Currently, there are no other cane viewing tours in the Burdekin.
Alternatively, the first cane fire of the season is traditionally celebrated as part of the Sweet Days Hot Nights Festival, held biennially at the Home Hill Showgrounds. This unique event offers visitors the chance to witness a cane fire while enjoying the broader festival program. The Sweet Days Hot Nights Festival will take place on Friday 28 and Saturday 29 May 2027.
