Canecutters Memorial

IMG_0016.jpg

Located at the Home Hill Showgrounds, the Canecutters Memorial is a striking tribute to the multicultural history of the sugarcane industry in the Burdekin. The two larger‑than‑life figures recognise the generations of workers whose labour helped shape the region’s identity and prosperity.

Completed in May 2016, the sculptures were designed, constructed and painted by Indigenous artists from the local Gudjuda Reference Group, under the mentorship of Dr Farvardin Daliri OAM. Each sculpture stands 3.5 metres tall, weighs 20 tonnes, and is constructed from steel and cement, making them an impressive visual landmark within the township.

Together, the sculptures celebrate the cultural diversity, resilience and contribution of hand cane cutters to the Burdekin’s rich agricultural story, offering visitors a meaningful insight into the region’s working heritage.
