Hand Cane Cutter

Hand Cane Cutter at Burdekin Diorama

Carved from timber, the Hand Cane Cutter sculpture at the Burdekin Diorama pays tribute to the significant role hand cane cutters played in shaping the Burdekin’s sugar industry and the lasting impact they had on the local community. The sculpture reflects both the physical labour and importance of cane cutting, an industry that helped define the region for generations.

Created as part of the 2021 Sweet Days Hot Nights Festival, renowned chainsaw artist Matty G crafted the sculpture during and after the event, transforming a raw timber log into a lasting work of art. The piece adds a unique creative legacy to the festival while celebrating the Burdekin’s working heritage.

Visitors are encouraged to take a closer look at the remarkable level of detail, from the Burdekin River carved to flow between the cutter’s feet to the cane trash darkening his legs — small but powerful elements that tell a deeper story of life and labour in the cane fields.
