Cane Cutter Monuments

In the township of Home Hill, there are two monuments respresenting the Australian sugar cane industry history. Located on the Bruce Highway, near the Lions Park and Home Hill Diorama, is a wooden carving of a hand cane cutter which was carved by chainsaw at the 2021 Sweet Days Hot Nights Festival by artist Matty George.

Another, two hand cane cutter sculptures are located at the Home Hill Showgrounds which represent the multicultural history of the sugar industry in the Burdekin. Completed in May 2016, the local Gudjuda Reference Group Aboriginal Corporation’s indigenous artists were mentored by Dr Farvardin Daliri OAM in designing, constructing and painting the sculptures. The sculptures are 3.5 metres high and 20 tonnes heavy, and are made from steel and cement.
